Storage Tips
- Create a list of the items you will be storing. This will allow our
manager to accurately determine the amount of storage space you will require.
- Plan the arrangement of the items within the storage unit before you
begin your move. Be sure to leave an isle in the center for easy access
to items stored in the rear of the unit.
- Check and make sure your belongings are covered by homeowners or renters
insurance. If not, purchase a separate insurance policy to cover your possessions.
- Think safety first! Never store hazardous materials such as flammable
liquids in your storage unit!
- Do not store food or other perishable items that will attract pests
or rodents.
- Keep your items off the floor to improve ventilation by making use of
pallets, plywood, corrugated cardboard mats, etc.
- Use the full height of the storage unit to take advantage of the complete
space. Make use of shelving to help organize your space.
- Label boxes on all sides for easy identification. Keep a list of the
contents in each box.
- Fill all boxes to avoid tipping or crushing when they are stacked. Place
the heaviest boxes on the bottom.
- Place frequently used items near the front of the unit for easy access.
- Place your valuable items such as stereos, cameras, etc. near the rear
of the unit for protection.
- Disassemble tables, bed frames, cabinets and other large items. Wrap
and label each piece accordingly for easy assembly at a later date.
- Clean and dry all appliances before storing them. Wedge refrigerator
and freezer doors ajar for ventilation and don't forget to use the space
inside for extra storage.
- Rub a few drops of machine oil on metal objects such as tools, bicycles
and equipment to avoid rusting. Avoid covering your possessions in plastic.
- Drain all gas from lawn mowers and power equipment before storing them
away.
- Position sofas and love seats standing on end. Stack chairs seat to
seat with tables placed upside down with legs pointing up (remove legs if
possible). Use bed sheets or other covers to wrap each item for protection.
- Mirrors, records and flat items should be stored standing on end. Books
should be stored laying flat and in small boxes.
- Clothing and drapes should be stored hanging inside wardrobes. Use drawers
in dressers to store delicate items.
